Lesson 2 : CALL

๐Ÿ’พ What is CALL? ๐Ÿ’พ

Children today are not the same like previous children back in the year 80's or 90's. They are more exposed to many things such as the latest technologies and internet, which is a place where they can gain a lot of information from there. Now this is where I am going to introduce about CALL.

๐Ÿ’ฎCALL is the short term for Computer Assisted Language Learning. CALL is often perceived as an  approach to language teaching and learning. The computer is used as a tool for the presentation, reinforcement and assessments of the material to be learned. It can ensure that students can stay interested in the learning process and will not get bored with it. Children prefer animations and more colorful and vibrant presentations rather than the text book like learning. (even I agree with the kids) ๐Ÿ˜€✌

➤ CALL covers any process of teaching in which students use a computer and it results to improving his or her language. It involves material designs, technologies, theories and modes of instruction.

→ types of programs provided by CALL such as :-

๐ŸŒท CALL-Specific Software
๐ŸŒฟ Generic Software
๐ŸŒท Web-based Learning
๐ŸŒฟ CMC (Computer Mediated Communication)

๐ŸŽCALL-Specific Software

๐ŸƒCSS are apps that are designed to facilitate the language learning among students. Applications such as CD-ROMs, language games, online interactive language learning exercises or quizzes and many more.

Examples of CSS :-

*KidSpeak - A 90's CD-Rom for learning language.*

๐Ÿ‰ Generic Software

๐ŸƒGeneric software is applications with general purposes. It can do multitasking  and is not limited to one particular application. Most applications can be used to support language learning.

Examples of Generic Softwares :-

( Microsoft Word )

( Powerpoint )

( Excel )

๐Ÿ†Web-based Learning Software

๐ŸŒธWeb-based Learning Software are apps or materials that can be found on the internet. It can be used as tools for language teaching and learning and delivered directly to students or learners.

Examples of Web-based Learning Software:-

(Online dictionary)

(Blogs)

๐ŸŒท Computer Mediated Communication

๐ŸŒตCMC defines as any human communication that happens through electronic devices. CMC can occur via computer-mediated formats such as instant messaging, email, chat rooms, social networks and also online forums.

๐Ÿ“ฃCMC can be divided into two :-

Synchronous

✔ Asynchronous

Examples of Synchronous CMS :-

Examples of Asynchronous CMC :-

Conclusion

๐Ÿ’œFor the conclusion, I think CMC is a good tool that are used to simplify our lives. It can save our time and helps us to communicate with other people far away from us. But still, CMC cannot and should not  replace face-to-face human interaction. Care must be taken so that we do not become overdependent on CMC in our daily communications. As a human being, we must also make sure that we do not abuse the use of CMC that had given to us.

๐Ÿ’ป WHAT IS A BLOG? ๐Ÿ’ป

๐Ÿ’™I'll put a little intro here. Let's start with the definitions. A blog is a frequently updated online personal journal or diary ๐Ÿ’ป. It's a place where you can express yourself to the whole world. A place to share your thoughts and passions. It's anything that you want it to be. Okay let's just say that a blog is your very own website that you can update on an ongoing basis. Blog is the short form for the word weblog and the two words are used interchangeably.

Now we moved to blog writing for ELT. What is ELT? It stands for English Language Teaching. Blogs are quite helpful for language teaching in classes.

๐Ÿ’พ TYPES OF BLOGS ๐Ÿ’พ

There are actually 4 types of blogs good for ELT.

๐Ÿ’œWell, here are a few reasons why:

Starting a blog is easy. The steps to beginning a blog are dead simple. You can choose a template from websites like Blogger, WordPress, or even Tumblr. Adding posts is almost as easy as sending e-mail.

♬ Teachers or educators can provide extra reading materials for students. They can read and review the lesson when they go back home.

๐Ÿ˜ŒEven though blogging is good, it also has its own disadvantages.

☑ Being on the computer all day takes students away from being outside and being active.
☑Teacher will find it hard to do any corrections on student's assignment or homework.
☑ Privacy issues. Anytime minors are posting information on the internet about themselves, family, school, ect. it poses a threat to them. Therefore there is a great need for the blog to secure to all outside people.

๐ŸŒธCONCLUSION๐ŸŒธ

⏩ In conclusion, blogging has the benefit of providing information or writing skills whether it be just basic English or for other courses. The theme can be relevant to any course or personal interest topic. Another benefit is the ability to share ideas and experiences, enabling people to learn from each other.
